What is UL Certification?

UL is a global leader in testing, inspection, certification, auditing and validation of a wide range of products in the both the United States and 63 other countries around the world. UL stands for Underwriter’s Laboratories and has been around for over 125 years. In a nutshell, it is a safety organization that sets industry-wide standards on new products from appliances to garments and continues to check the products to ensure they’re up to these standards. They also ensure that the products are constructed correctly for the highest safety.\

The UL Certification has been around for a century and has instilled a large degree of trust with the public for which products they deem safe for consumers.  It also ensures that the manufactures have taken necessary steps to implement procedures that guarantees a high quality product.

UL can be seen as having the “Gold Standard” when it comes to quality, safety and trust in products for end consumers. To be able to claim this standard,  a company must go through rigorous examination, testing and follow up surveillance of their manufacturing capabilities and processes.

What is NFPA 2112?

NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 2112 is the Standard on Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire. Established in 1896, NFPA serves as the world’s leading advocate of fire prevention and is an authoritative source on public safety. The mission of the international nonprofit NFPA is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education. This standard outlines the various performance requirements and testing methods for both the FR fabric and FR garments that are needed to be considered in compliance with the standard. It also includes proper labelling and quality control requirements for the FR manufacturers. This is the standard most recognized in the flash fire industry and compliance with it is typically asked for by end users.

Our Commitment to NFPA 2112 UL Garment Certification

This certification applies to some of our FR garments showing that they have been tested and evaluated to the requirements of NFPA 2112-2018. Having UL Garment Certification gives our customers piece of mind that our safety clothes they are wearing actually do what we claim it does.

Are all Flame Resistant fabrics and garments tested to be certified to be compliant with NFPA 2112?

Unfortunately some FR garments on the market can be misleading as to what it claims to be. The NFPA mandates strict labeling requirements on FR garments. Along with the mark of the 3rd party certifier, the proper wording on the labels should read as follows;

“THIS CLOTHING ITEMS MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS OF NFPA 2112-2018. NFPA 2113 REQUIRES UPPER AND LOWER BODY COVERAGE. FLAME RESISTANT CLOTHING FOR PROTECTION OF INDUSTRIAL PERSONNEL AGAINST SHORT DURATION THERMAL EXPOSURES FROM FIRE IN ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 2112-2018 [MH64182]”
